1393963 Labelling machines AVERY PRODUCTS CORP 21 April 1972 [29 April 1971] 18512/72 Heading B8F In a labelling machine of the kind which dispenses pressure sensitive labels 26 from a release coated web 28 by drawing it around a dispensing blade 18 the web 28 is alternately braked and advanced in accordance with the activation of a solenoid 56 under the control of a label sensor 24 which co-ordinates the label dispensing with advancing substrates, the web tension being kept constant for accuracy. In the de-activated condition of the solenoid 56 a lower spring-mounted brake bar 42 presses the web 28 against an adjustable upper brake bar 46 in order to brake it. Upon activation of the solenoid 56 carriage 32, which carries the lower brake bar 42 and a nip-roll 52 traversed by the spent web 28 pivots about shaft 34 causing both the brake to disengage and the nip-roll 52 to force the web 28 against a driven roll 54 which rotates with constant torque and velocity, thus advancing the web. Web tension is kept constant between the brake and the belt driven take-up reel 22 by virtue of a secondary brake system; the web 28 passes over a dancer roll 65 mounted at the end of a spring biased bar, whose displacement under increasing web tension brakes the take-up reel 22. Alternatively a slip clutch may be provided. Web tension is kept constant between the web feed reel 12 and the principal brake by means of a dancer roll 68 mounted on a spring-biased bar 70. A web snubber brush 64 imparts an initial force to the web 28 to aid in accurately positioning labels with respect to label sensor 24. A pressure leaf 80 prevents web 28 lifting near the dispensing blade 18. Means are provided to vary the elevation and pitch of the label dispenser. The apparatus of the invention may also be used with a vacuum-pick-up label applicator, or for dispensing labels torn from a web-carried perforated label strip.
