Abstract
1393888 Electric machines having liquid current transfer devices INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 4 May 1972 [4 May 1971] 12941/71 Heading H2A [Also in Division F2] In an electrical machine, e.g. a drum type homopolar generator, having a current transfer device employing liquid metal as a current transfer medium between relatively moving parts, one or more fibre screens 3 are attached to one part and brush against the other part in order to confine the metal within the machine. In the embodiment shown, two screens are attached to a brush 1 and engage a rotor 2 to confine the metal to the region therebetween, but in other embodiments they are attached to the stator 4, or to the stator housing (6), Fig. 3, to prevent the metal passing to a shaft bearing (7); alternatively, they may be attached to the rotor. The fibres may be of carbon, or ceramic, may be coated with a conductive metal film, and may be connected to the brush via a high impedance in order to limit fault current arcing.
