Abstract

1393689 Electrolytic production of silver SNAMPROGETTI SPA 21 July 1972 [31 July 1971] 34375/72 Heading C7B In a method of electro-chemically manufacturing silver particles, a solution of silver salt is subjected to a succession of cycles which include a period of 3-10 seconds in which the electric current is passed through the solution and a period of 3-60 seconds in which no current is passed. Once in every 10-50 cycles the current may be reversed for 1-60 secs to laser the deposit. The solution may comprise silver, nitrate, chloride, sulphate acetate or oxalate and contain a complexing agent e.g. NH3 at 3-50 moles per gm atom of Ag. The solution may be 0.1-10.0 gm/litre Ag and pH9- 12.5, the current density may be 0.1-0.5 amp/ cm<SP>2</SP>. The cell may comprise radial electrodes in groups of five pairs of anodes 109 and cathodes 110. The anodes 109 may be graphite, Pt, Pt-Rh or Ti. The cathodes may be Ag, Stainless steel, graphite, Pt, Pt-Rh or Ti. The solution is fed in at 115 and is led off via valve 112 to a centrifuge for separating the silver particles. The solution may be recycled. The silver has a particle size of less than 1500A and may be used as a catalyst in the oxidation of ethylene or ethylene oxide.
