Abstract
1393527 Radiometer NEWCASTLE REGIONAL HOSPITAL BOARD F T FARMER and P O BYRNE 25 May 1972 [10 May 1971] 14062/71 Heading G1A A radiometer comprises a thermistor T coupled to a sheet of heat conducting material (copper) the other side of which is blackened and the thermistor T is connected in one arm of a bridge circuit, as shown. In operation the bridge is fed from a variable voltage source controlled by a Resistor R 1 and with no radiation falling on the radiometer resistance R is adjusted until the bridge is balanced, and the voltage across the thermistor is measured (the thermistor also serves as a heat source. After this preliminary adjustment the resistor R is not touched. Then the disc is exposed to radiation (to be measured) thereby altering the thermal conditions of the disc, and the resistance R 1 is adjusted until the bridge is rebalanced (and the thermistor achieves the initial resistance again). The voltage across the thermistor is again measured and the difference between the electrical power consumption of the thermistor under the two conditions is as determined from the two voltage measurements therefore a measure of the intensity of the incident radiation. The thermistor may be included in a tube with a quartz window.
