Abstract

1393431 Anchors DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 29 Jan 1973 [27 Jan 1972] 3920/72 Heading B7S An anchor for use on land or in shallow water by land vehicles, amphibious vehicles or barges comprises an elongated shank 1; a fluke plate 4 oblique to and rigidly attached to one end of the shank and a self-righting device attached to the shank to correct the attitude of the anchor to ensure correct ground engagement. The selfrighting device comprises at least three laterally projecting arms 13, 14, 15 each fixed to and spaced angularly around the shank, adjacent to the end remote from the fluke plate and so arranged that on tensioning of the rope of the anchor at least one of the arms 13, 14, 15 engages the ground and causes the anchor to reorientate. As described, the fluke plate 4 comprises a pair of plates 7, 8 each having a prong 11, 12 provided with a spade member 23, 24. Arm 15 of the self-righting device projects at an acute angle to the narrow end of the anchor and is made up from two lengths of angle bracket interconnected at their free ends by a thin plate 19. Arms 13, 14 comprise a single length of angle bracket extending perpendicular to the plane of the shank plate 1, and provided with pointed spade members 21, 22 at its ends. The anchor may be propelled by a rocket motor 25 mounted parallel to the shank and a plate 39 is provided in the throat of the anchor for cutting through vegetation.
