Abstract

1393011 Polyamide fibres E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 27 April 1972 [28 April 1972 (2) 17 Aug 1971 (2)] 19574/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Fibres and films are made from a polyamide having an inherent viscosity of at least 2À5 and consisting essentially of recurring units I and II, or III, or I and II and III wherein I is II is and III is When I and II are present in the polymer they are present in substantially equimolar amounts. R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> groups, which may be the same or different, are such that at least 95 mol per cent of the total R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> consist of single rigid radicals with extended bonds (as herein defined), or a series of such rigid radicals linked by extended bonds, rigid ring radicals may also be linked by azo or azoxy groups. n is 0 or 1. The fibres and films have a filament or film tenacity of 18 to 14 g.p.d., a filament or film breaking elongation of 3À5 to 8À0% and crystalline regions with a primary appararent crystallite size of 0 to 52Š. R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> groups mentioned are 1,4- phenylene; 4,4<SP>1</SP>-biphenylene; 1,5-naphthylene; 2,6-naphthylene; trans- 1 ,4-cyclohexylene; 2,5- pyridylene; trans-trans-4,4<SP>1</SP>-bicyclohexylene and 1,4-phenylene groups linked by transvinylene, ethynylene, azo or azoxy ; R may also be selected from trans-vinylene, ethynylene, trans-, trans-1,4-butadienylene or 2,4<SP>1</SP>-trans-vinylenephenylene and R<SP>11</SP> may be 2,4<SP>1</SP>-transvinylene-phenylene. All may be substituted or unsubstituted. Fibres are prepared by wet-spinning; a dope of the polymer being extruded through a layer of an inert non-coagulating fluid into a coagulating bath. The solvent may consist of either sulphuric acid of at least 98% concentration, chlorosulphuric acid or fluorosulphuric acid and the polymer concentration is at least 30 grams per 100 ml. of solvent.
