Abstract

1393093 Measuring movement of piston BRITISH NON-FERROUS METALS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 24 July 1972 [26 July 1971] 34897/71 Heading G1N In die casting or injection moulding, movement of a piston-rod 20 actuating a plunger 10 by which material is injected is sensed by a stationary electromagnetic sensor 30 co-operating with the surface of the rod 20. The rod is ferromagnetic and may have a row of holes, circumferential grooves or a helical groove filled with copper 33, the surface being chromium plated. Or the rod may be periodically magnetized or carry a magnetized tape, the pattern then being changeable. The pattern may be of constant or varying pitch. The sensor may comprise a permanent magnet 37 with pole pieces 35 carrying coils 38 and tips 36 arranged to be insensitive to variations in spacing between the sensor and the rod. Alternatively, a single chisel-ended magnetic core may be used. A control circuit may increase the hydraulic pressure or operate a booster 26 at a given point in the working stroke of rod 20, or initiate opening of the die at a given point in the return stroke. The speed of the rod may be measured during the working and return strokes.
