Abstract

1392432 STOL aircraft, HAWKER SIDDELEY AVIATION Ltd 6 April 1972 [29 March 1971] 8085/71 Addition to 947792 Heading B7G A STOL aircraft has lift fans or jet lift engines mounted in the wings, or in pod extensions of the wings, in close proximity to the trailing edge. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, an aircraft has underwing pod mounted forward propulsion engines 12, high-lift flaps 15 and, inboard of the flaps, pods 18 housing lift fans 17, the pods being closed during forward flight by upper and lower doors 19. In Fig. 5, fans 25 are driven by gas generators 23 with forward facing air intakes 22, the gas supply to the fans being cross-connected by a duct 24 to enable balanced lift to be maintained in the event of failure of one gas generator. Gas turbine jet lift units may be used instead of lift fans and in either installation the lift units may be swivelled to give a component of forward or rearward thrust.
