Abstract

1392212 Metallic sleeves and pipe-joint seals RAYCHEM CORP 29 March 1972 [2 April 1971] 14805/72 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions B2 B5 F2 and H2] An involutely heat-recoverable metal article comprises a laminate of (1) a layer which has been set in an unstable distorted state and which will tend to return to its original form on heating and (2) a layer which, at the recovery temperature of (1), does not recover or recovers to a lesser extent. On heating, the shrinking of the layer (1) is restrained by the layer (2) and the article therefore tends to a spiral configuration. The layers (1) and (2) are preferably polymeric but may be of metal. The article may be recovered around an elongate substrate (e.g. cable, wire, pipe) to form a wrap-around sleeve at cracks or junction points. Preferably the opposed faces of the laminate in the recovered article are bonded together, e.g. by provision of adhesive or by choosing the materials (1) and (2) such that (2) is bondable to (1) under the conditions of heat-recovery by further heating to cause fusion; a second layer (2) may be provided on the face of layer (1) to assist such fusion-bonding. The article may be fixed to a wire or cable splice by providing solder at the point of contact. The portion of the article which contacts the substrate is preferably coated with grease, mastic or room temperature flowable material to enable conformity with surface irregularities in cable splices. In a preferred embodiment, a sealed closure member is formed by providing layer (2) in the form of end portions 10, 11 on opposite faces of layer (1). These portions are subjected to partial recovery to form an S-shaped article as shown in Fig. 12, and the article is folded into tubular form to interlock the curved end portions. The interlocked portion is then heated to cause further recovery in spiral fashion at 13 (Fig. 14), and the main tubular portion is heated to cause recovery radially inwards. Suitable metal layers (1) are alloys as specified in US Specifications 3,012,882 and 3,174,851, e.g. Au-Cd and Ag-Au-Cd alloys, which are obtained in a distorted state by stress relief of material which has been deformed above a certain temperature. Layer (2) may be of metal or polymeric material.
