Abstract
1392053 Ether polycarboxylic acid salts UNILEVER Ltd 8 June 1972 [11 June 1971] 26699/72 Heading C2C Salts of ether polycarboxylic acids are prepared by reacting, in an aquÞous alkaline medium containing alkaline earth metal or zinc cations, an aldehyde and cyanide ions or the corresponding cyanhydrin, with a salt of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid. Exemplified aldehydes are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, aldol, glyoxylic acid, glyoxal, glyceraldehyde and glucose. Exemplified unsaturated polycarboxylic acids are maleic acid, mono(C 1 -C 3 ) alkyl or cis-di(C 1 -C 3 )alkyl substituted maleic acid, itaconic acid, aconitic acid and citraconic acid. The salt of maleic acid may also be prepared in situ by adding maleic anhydride to the aqueous alkaline medium.
