1391781 Non woven pile fabrics CARPET WOOL CO Ltd and R W A ROWE 30 March 1972 [19 Jan 1971 13 Oct 1971] 2648/71 and 47610/71 Heading D1K A patterned glued pile fabric is formed by forming a base layer 13-17 on the top of the pile of an already existing pile fabric 9 10, and then severing the pile intermediate of the two base layers. A woven pile fabric, such as Axminster or Wilton has one or more layers 13, 14 of latex or plastics adhesive applied to the top of its pile and successively dried, and backing sheets may then be applied such as scrim 16 and hessian after the application of an adhesive 15. One or both of the layers of scrim and hessian may be dampened before application. Backing layers 17 containing nylon, P.V.C., or polyethylene may also be used. Instead of a woven backing layer, filaments of jute, cotton, synthetic fibres, or mixtures thereof may be applied to the base layer and held in place by an adhesive. The filaments may be undulated in the plane of the backing as they are applied to produce a zig-zag diamond mesh on the base layer, and straight filaments may also be incorporated. A sculptured pile effect may be produced by passing the fabric between a pair of contoured rollers 50, 51 (Fig. 8) or a chain containing contoured links, as the pile is sliced by a band blade 18 between the two base layers.
