Abstract

1390526 Coated metal ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 20 Sept 1973 [28 Oct 1972] 49805/ 72 Heading B2E A metal surface is aluminised by applying a curable silicate based paint composition containing a solvent and aluminium particles of not more than ten microns diameter to the surface, evaporating off said solvent and heating the painted metal surface in an inert or reducing atmosphere at 800-1,100‹C to enable at least some of the aluminium particles to diffuse into the metal surface. More than one coat of paint composition may be applied, the solvent in each coat being evaporated off prior to the application of the subsequent coat. The metal surface may be nickel, cobalt or iron or alloys thereof. The inert atmosphere may be argon. The reducing atmosphere may be hydrogen. The paint composition may comprise a mixture of potassium silicate, ethylene glycol and aluminium powder. The paint may be applied by brushing, dipping or spraying. The method may be used to restore the surface of an already aluminised metal surface that has been damaged and part of the aluminised layer lost. In the example a gas turbine blade manufactured from a nickel based alloy is aluminised.
