Abstract

1390396 Rotary driers AMF Inc 27 June 1973 [21 July 1972] 34291/72 Heading F4G A rotary drier for particulate loose material, e.g. tobacco, comprises a cylinder 15 arranged to rotate about a sustantially horizontal axis and being provided internally thereof with hollow, axially extending paddles 24 and at least one gas burner 28, the interior of the paddles 24 communicating with the exterior of the cylinder such that flame from the burner(s) is directed into the paddles. As shown the paddles are triangular in section, one of the walls thereof being radially extending with respect to the cylinder. The cylinder 15 is enclosed by a casing 27 to form a combustion space which communicates at its lower end with the burner(s) 28 and at its upper end with a flue leading to a gas collection manifold 29. The casing 27 is further partly surrounded by curved sheets 31, 32 to form a passageway in which air is pre-heated prior to being blown into the cylinder either in the direction of or opposing the flow of material. The burner may be in the form of a plurality of strip burners each being controllable independently according to the required drying temperature. The temperature may be measured using thermistors. Alternatively the temperature may be measured by measuring the amount of expansion of the cylinder (Fig. 6, not shown). The material is fed into the cylinder by a vibratory feed conveyer 51, a seive 40 and sieve cleaner 41 being provided adjacent the conveyer 51. In a modification drying air is passed into the cylinder through a pre-heated air inlet probe (Fig. 7, not shown) which is rotated to keep it free of the material. A thermistor to measure the temperature of the material is mounted at the forward end of the probe.
