Abstract

1390260 Applying screw-caps to containers K G HINTERKOPF 15 Sept 1972 [24 Dec 1971] 42816/72 Heading B8T Screw-caps 3 from a preferably vertical feed conduit 1 are gripped in turn by pincer-like grippers 5 pivoted at 13, 14, which advance them to a respective neck of a tube 7 carried on a mandrel 7a of a turntable head rotating intermittently about a preferably horizontal axis 9. After placing the cap 3 on the tube neck the grippers 5 open by means of an actuating linkage (not shown), and the turntable is indexed (as shown in direction of arrow 10). The cap may be given an initial twist when applied and subsequently screwed on by rotating the tube (26) in a mechanism, Fig. 3 (not shown), in which a plug (25) holds the cap against rotation. When the cap is screwed home, a spring loaded piston (29) is caused to slip at a friction surface (30) with a holder (27) fast with the plug (25) thereby preventing over-tightening.
