Abstract

1389934 Clear thermoformable coatings ROHM & HAAS CO 20 March 1972 [31 March 1971] 12869/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Thermoplastic substrates are coated with an optically clean coating composition comprising a thermoplastic aliphatic polyurethane which is the reaction product of a hydroxy terminated aliphatic polyester and an aliphatic diisocyanate, the polyester being the reaction product of a dibasic acid and a glycol in a molar ratio of 1:2 to 5:6, the polyurethane being a non-curing, non-cross-linked lacquer type thermoformable aliphatic polyurethane and having a M.W. of 40,000 to 85,000. The substrates may be of such thermoplastic polymers as polycarbonates, cellulose acetate-butyrate polymers, polyvinyl chlorides, polystyrenes, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers and particularly acrylic polymers. The polyurethane compositions are preferably prepared and applied in a suitable solvent. In a typical Example a clear acrylic sheet is dipcoated into a solution of a polyurethane prepared from an adipic acid/hexamethylene glycol polyester and bis (4-isocyanatocyclohexyl) methane dissolved in cyclohexanone. Other methods of coating mentioned are spray, electrostatic spray, roller, knife and curtain coating, and the coated product may be used as a glazing material, for a mirror, or for a lens, or in furniture or building structures.
