Abstract

1389997 Surface condensers WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 29 May 1973 [12 June 1972] 25474/73 Heading F4S [Also in Division F1] In an arrangement in which a steam turbine 10 is supported by at least a portion of the shell structure of a surface condenser 12 or 76, that portion of the condenser shell structure which provides the turbine support is maintained substantially at the temperature of the condensate regardless of the turbine exhaust steam temperature. By this arrangement it is said, any variations in alignment of the turbine shaft 14 caused by expansion of the turbine support means, are minimized. In Fig. 2 the condenser 12 and turbine 10 are mounted on a surface 37 of a ship. The upper portions 47, 61 of the condenser shell together with flanges 43, 44 and gussets 45, all forming part of the shell structure, provide the means whereby the turbine 10 is supported on its base 46. Troughs 52, 65 are formed inside the shell portions 47, 61 and some of the condensate being pumped out of the hot-well 33 is directed via lines 70 and 71 into the troughs which have overflows 73, 74 leading the condensate back into the hot-well. In Fig. 5 where the condenser 76 is mounted on foundations 77, the troughs 80, 81 extend the full height of the shell structure.
