Abstract

1389839 Carburtters; fuel systems CALOR GAS Ltd 22 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971] 44420/71 Heading F1B Liquefied petroleum gas control apparatus comprises liquid l.p.g. fuel inlet means 17, Fig. 1, communicating with an engine air inlet duct 1 through a fuel metering aperture 13 which is movable transversely of the air duct in dependence on air-flow, the fuel flowing continuously through the fuel metering aperture, a control member 20 mounted on the opposite side of the air duct to control the area of the fuel metering aperture in dependence on the position of the latter and heating means 43 for the control member remote from the part co-operating with the fuel metering aperture. Member 20 is movable to control the fuel/air ratio by rotation of lever 32 or by screwing member 26 into or out of part 24. The engagement of member 38 with pad 39 prevents fuel escape when the engine is stopped. Chamber 40 receives hot water from the engine and a throttle 2 may be heated by hot water fed through ducts 43. Alternatively the member 20 is electrically heated. Ice or hydrate deposition may be reduced by coating internal surfaces with P.T.F.E. The fuel supply pressure is maintained constant by a controller 50, Fig. 2, in which fuel from inlet 51 flows to outlet 52 and fuel pressure acting on diaphragm 55 varies the bleed-off via a tapered valve member 56. In a modification inlet manifold pressure is admitted to chamber 62 to control the fuel supply in the engine idling condition. A fuel supply system includes a storage tank 100, Fig. 3, from which fuel is pumped by pump 101 through filter 102 to the pressure controller 103 and thence to carburetter 104. Fuel from the pressure controller returns via line 53 and excess fuel from the carburetter returns via line 105. In a modification of this system the pressure controller is arranged in the carburetter excess fuel return line (105), Fig. 4 (not shown) and has its first outlet 52, Fig. 2 omitted.
