Abstract
1389772 Rotary engines C A COSTANTINOU 7 Sept 1973 42169/73 Heading F1F A rotary internal combustion engine comprises a housing 1 formed in two parts which are secured together to provide a generally toroidal space of rectangular cross-section and in which is mounted a rotor 8 having inner and outer concentric annular webs 22, 23 of sinuous configuration, the undulating side surfaces thereof defining inner and outer rings of chambers within the housing, partition plates 11, 12 slidable in recesses in the housing and having end surfaces in wiping engagement with the undulating surfaces of the webs 22, 23, the housing having fuel inlet passages 30 communicating with the inner chambers and exhaust passages 33 communicating with the outer chambers and transfer passages 31a, 31c which inter-connect related pairs of inner and outer chambers when in register with passages 31b fomed in a rim portion of the rotor 8 which runs in a channel 9 of the housing and spark plugs 32 to ignite compressed fuel gas in the outer chambers. The rotor 8 is mounted for rotation on a shaft 17 and the sinuous webs 22, 23 thereof are disposed so as to be 180 degrees out of phase. The partition plates 11, 12 are mounted in pairs with one plate on each side of the respective web 22 or 23 and the plates are urged by compression springs 15 into engagement with the webs. Springs and ball plunger assemblies 11a aid the springs 15 in retaining the plates 11 in sealing engagement with the rotor 8 and similarly plates 12 are provided with sealing strips 12a and springs 12b. In operation as the rotor 8 rotates, the webs 22, 23 and partition plates co-operate to provide chambers of varying volume; fuel gas being admitted into and compressed in the inner chambers associated with the web 22 and then being transferred to the outer chambers to be ignited to produce power from the engine, the burnt gases finally being exhausted through the passages 33.
