Abstract
1389021 Retro-reflective material BAKELITE XYLONITE Ltd 1 March 1972 [1 March 1971] 5658/71 Heading B2E A retro-reflective material comprises spherical beads of a transparent or translucent material (especially glass) of refractive index 1.7 to 2.0 distributed in a mono-layer over, and embedded in, an area on the surface of a plastics matrix, this area having an embossing superimposed on the beaded surface thereof. The beads may be in contact with a reflective layer comprising gold, silver or aluminium or a material containing TiO 2 or BaSO 4 , and silver-coated beads may particularly be used. The reflective layer is usually removed from the exposed portions of the beads by abrasion or chemical treatment. The matrix may be of phenol-formaldehyde, epoxy or unsaturated polyester resin, thermosetting or thermoplastic polyurethane, rigid or flexible PVC, polystyrene, ABS resin, polymethylmethacrylate, polyamide, polycarbonate, polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene or polypropylene and may be in the form of a plastics-coated cotton fabric. The beads are applied to the matrix by spraying or dropping, electrostatically, by a printing technique or by means of a release carrier, the surface of the plastics being softened (if not naturally tacky) by heating or solvent action, or else a pressure sensitive adhesive or other adhesive pattern may be applied to the surface. A coupling agent, especially an organosilane, may be applied to the beads to assist bonding. Embossing is effected by means of a suitably engraved roller, platen or plate, embedding being effected either simultaneously or previously.
