Abstract

1389055 Valves WABCO WESTINGHOUSE GmbH 20 March 1972 [18 March 1971] 12810/72 Addition to 1384764 Heading F2V An electromagnetically operated valve, which is suitable for use in anti-skid braking systems of motor vehicles, comprises a magnetic core 1 having an inlet bore 13 extending there-through, armature 2 which is energizable against the bias of a weak spring 18 to the position shown, a non- magnetic armature guide tube 3, and a chamber 7 which has an outlet port 9, and a vent port 8, the vent port being closable by an elastic sealing element 11 carried by the armature 2. In the state of the valve shown, inlet bore 13 is substantially closed by the metal-to-metal engagement of a peripheral projection 15 on the armature 2 with a plane surface 14 of the core 1. Accordingly outlet 9 communicates with vent port 8. On de-energizing coil 4, the armature is moved by spring 18 to close vent port 8 and the inlet bore 13 is placed in communication with outlet 9 by way of axial grooves 17 formed in the armature 2. Rapid change over between the above two mentioned states is ensured by the formation of a shallow recess 16 within the confines of the armature peripheral projection. Such recess may, in modified embodiments, be formed by providing either the core or both the core and the armature with a projecting portion. The provision of such recess increases the surface area of the armature upon which inlet presure acts.
