Abstract

1389041 Chucks BLACK & DECKER MFG CO 10 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 11327/72 Heading B3B A tool chuck for an electric drill 19 comprises a body 13 having a plurality of apertures 25 converging towards one end of the body, a jaw 23 slidably supported in each of the apertures and having gear teeth 29 formed thereon, and a gear 26 rotatably supported on the body and provided with internal gear teeth 27 engageable with the teeth of the jaws whereby rotation of the gear is effective to move the jaws in the apertures 25 to grip or release a tool bit 22, the chuck being characterized by the gear 26 and body 13 having interengaging means, e.g. a lip 47 and a recess 43, to prevent axial movement in either direction of the gear on the body, the said means being disposed wholly between the internal gear teeth on the gear 26 and the said one end of the body. The gear 26 may be made from a plurality of arcuate segments held in position by a cover 49 which includes a rolled over end 51 which is an interference fit on the said arcuate portion. The cover 49 is also a dirt guard.
