Abstract
1388769 Numerical control of machine tools ING C OLIVETTI & C SpA 17 May 1972 [18 May 1971] 23258/72 Heading G3N In a numerical control system for a lathe, discrete signals representing the transverse position of the lathe tool are used to produce a continuous transverse position signal. The ratio between a desired cutting rate signal and the continuous transverse position signal is calculated and used to control a servomotor which regulates the speed of rotation of the lathe mandrel. As shown, a punched tape reader 26 reads discrete positional data X 2 , Z 2 , prescribed tool feedrate F in mm. per revolution, prescribed cutting rate per unit time S, and offsets P and D representing X and Z divergences from a standard tool. The positional data are passed to an interpolator 96 of the type described in Specification 1154761 together with the feedrate signal F, converted into a mm. per unit time signal by multiplication by the angular speed of the mandrel supplied by a sensor 92 through a frequency divider 91, using a clock controlled accumulator 88. The resulting continuous position signals X' n , Z' n are passed through D-to-A converters 102, 104 to lathe slide servos 110, 112. The X position signal X' n , after allowing for the offset P, is fed to a flip-flop register 122 to convert it to parallel digital form for use in a dividerconverter circuit 126. Other inputs in similar form are derived from the cutting rate data S and the gear ratio G between a servomotor and the mandrel. The circuit 126 includes variable gain operational amplifiers, Fig. 3 (not shown) to form a signal N representing the ratio between the cutting rate S and the X position signal allowing for the selected gear ratio G. The signal N is fed to the mandrel servomotor. Manual adjustments 72, 74, 132 are provided for the offsets P, D and cutting rate S, respectively. The frequency divider 91 may also be adjusted.
