Abstract

1388748 Polyurethanes UNION CARBIDE CORP 1 Aug 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 35811/72 Heading C3R Polyurethanes are prepared by reacting an organic diisocyanate, a chain extender containing amine and/or hydroxyl groups and a polymeric diol mixture which comprises (a) 3 to 30% by weight of a relatively high molecular weight poly-(alkylene alkanedioate) glycol of average M.W. 3500 to 40,000 and (b) 97 to 70% by weight of a relatively low M.W. polymeric diol of average M.W. 500 to 3500 and being either a poly-(alkylene alkanedioate) glycol or a poly-(oxycaproyl) diol, (a) and (b) differing in molecular weight by at least 1000. The reaction may take place by the "one shot" or "prepolymer" processes and may be conducted in the presence of a blowing agent to prepare polyurethane foams In a typical example, a poly- (oxycaproyl) diol of M.W. 2000 is mixed with a poly-(butylene adipate) glycol of M.W. 10,000 and the mixture reacted with 1,4-butane diol and p,p<SP>1</SP>-diphenylmethane diisocyanate.
