1388531 Detecting flaws NIPPON OIL & FATS CO Ltd 8 Jan 1973 [25 Feb 1972] 1018/73 Heading G1S A method of detecting flaws comprises the successive steps of coating a liquid penetrant containing a substantially colourless colour former on the surface of a material or article to be tested, removing excess penetrant, and coating on the surface a developer containing a colour reactant whereby chemical colour forming occurs in flaws present on the surface to produce a colour. The colour formers include indicators, complexing reagents, leuco dyes, oxines and diazo coupling- forming substances. An indicator is any substance which by its own colour or by some other easily observable property indicates the presence or absence of some other substance. Complexing reagents are broadly organic compounds, and leuco dyes are capable of yielding a colour upon being either reduced or oxidized. Many examples of colour formers and colour reactants are given.
