Abstract

GLISH 15 Dec 1972 [6 Jan 1972] 58445/72 Heading B8H Apparatus for use in handling a roll of material 14 comprises a support member 12 which is attachable to a lifting device (not shown), a probe 10, having expansible jaws 11 for engagement with the inside of the core of the roll, depending from the member 12, a vacuum disc A comprising a backing plate 16 being mounted on the probe 10, and a foraminous disc 31 underlies the plate 16 and is sealed in place by means of underlying sealing members 32, 33 which lie opposite to eight radially projecting flanges (22-29) formed in the backing plate 16, Fig. 3 (not shown), there being a source of vacuum 39 connected by means of a pipe 37 to a port 36 in the plate 16, the foraminous disc 31 causing an equalization of the suction force throughout the area to which it is applied. The probe 10 is provided with a passageway 43 connected to a source of pressurized air 44 through which air is discharged in use into the centre core of the roll 14 so that the air emerges at the lower end of the roll and compensates for the residual suction which would otherwise be present at the bottom of the roll 14.
