Abstract

1388115 Metal reinforced D.M.C. flooring BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 21 July 1972 [30 July 1971] 35912/71 Heading B5A A process for producing a metal reinforced D.M.C. article such as the grilled flooring used in cat walks, stairs, landing stages and oil wellhead platforms comprises locating a metal reinforcing member 1 in a pressure mould by means of a plastics support 3 having a base 6 for resting on the bottom surface of the mould and an upper surface containing means to hold the metal member 1 and curing under pressure, e.g. 100-300 p.s.i. and at a temperature in the range 120-180‹ C. a polyester D.M.C. 7 containing fibre and mineral filler. The holding means may comprise projections which fit into corresponding holes in the member 1 or a recess, e.g. a groove into which a part of the member 1, e.g. a steel strip fits. The holding means may be supplemented by unsaturated polyester adhesives. Each member 1 may be supported by more than one support 3 and may be provided with indentations or holes 2 in the sides to provide keys for the D.M.C. 7. The support(s) 3 may be formed by moulding or extruding unsaturated polyester D.M.C., and may be located in the mould either by side arms engaging the mould walls, by integrally moulded tongues or keys engaging mould recesses or by providing a channel in the mould base for accommodating the base of the member 1. The support 3 may be pre-moulded about part of the member 1. Any parts, e.g. base 6 of the support 3 left projecting after moulding of the article may be removed by grinding. Examples of unsaturated polyester and co-polymerizable monomers together with curing and inhibiting agents are given. The fibres may be of glass or sisal and the mineral filler may be powdered silica, alumina, or calcium carbonate.
