Abstract

1388199 Disinfecting waste liquid DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP 6 Sept 1972 [7 Sept 1971] 41325/72 Heading C1C [Also in Division C7] A process for disinfecting sewage comprises electrolyzing the sewage in the presence of alkali metal halide solution such that a chemical to disinfect the sewage is produced in situ and the solids in the sewage are floated and subsequently removed. The electrolyzing step is carried out in a chamber the top portion of which tapers upwardly to a solids discharge region. The sewage may be subjected to U.V. rays during electrolysis. In Fig. 1, the sewage is electrolysed in chamber 11 comprising cathode(s) 12b and dimensionally stable anode(s) 12a and a disintegrator-mixer 15. Inlet 9 may be connected to a toilet which uses sea, water salted water or fresh water as flushing medium. If fresh water is used, water, e.g. under the control of the flushing system, is passed through salt bed 19 to provide the necessary salt solution in chamber 11. The floating solids are discharged to filter bag 32 and filtrate is returned to chamber 11. The solids may be burned. The chamber 11 may have a pyramidal or conical top 6. The chamber 11 may be provided with means for supplying U.V. rays. The chambers 8, 11, 30 may be constructed as an integral unit. Rotatable skimmer blades may be used for removing the floating solids to bag 32. The anode may be titanium, tantalum, niobium or zirconium coated with platinum, ruthenium, palladium, iridium rhodium, osmium, or alloys thereof or with a solid solution of oxides of said metals. The solid solutions may be modified, e.g. with tin dioxide or cobalt titanate. The cathode may be titanium.
