Abstract

1388012 Polyesters SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 9 Feb 1972 6060/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] A mixture of ethers (useful as a diluent for a hydraulic fluid, see Division C5) is made by passing an excess of isopropyl alcohol and ethylene oxide through a reactor in the presence of a catalyst at elevated temperature and fractionating to obtain a mixture of mono-isopropyl ethers of tri-, tetra- and penta-ethylene glycols. Unreacted isopropyl alcohol and the ethers of mono- and di-ethylene glycols can be recycled. The reaction can be continuous in a tubular reactor and the catalyst may be sodium hydroxide. The bottoms from the fractionation can be separated, e.g. by flash distillation, to obtain a polyoxyethylene, which can be used as or as part of the lubricating component of the hydraulic fluid.
