Abstract
1387730 Carbon black CONTINENTAL CARBON CO 28 July 1972 35447/72 Heading C1A In producing a carbon black having a particle size similar to that of thermal black from an oil feedstock, in a continuous process, a minor proportion of the total feedstock supplied to the furnace is sprayed together with hot combustion gases from the burning of a hydrocarbon fuel into a first stage reaction zone I under conditions such that carbon black formation is initiated; the resulting products are then passed into a second reaction zone of circular cross-section and larger diameter, into the upstream end of which, e.g. through pipes 29 and jets 31, the major portion of the total feedstock input to the furnace is supplied, the feedstock being supplied as a plurality of sprays equally spaced about the periphery of the cross-section and focused on a downstream point, e.g. II, lying on the axis of the zone, a further supply of hot combustion gas is introduced tangentially, e.g. through ports 39 immediately downstream of the nozzles 31; the reaction products from this second zone are then passed to a third zone which has a circular cross-section and is of a larger diameter than the second zone into which third zone a third supply of combustion gases is introduced tangentially, e.g. through ports 51, which ports are distributed along the length of the third zone, and then quenching the reaction products at a point downstream of this third zone. The first zone is preferably a tubular reactor into which the feedstock is introduced axially, e.g. through nozzle 7, into a whirling stream of combustion gases produced with air from line 19 and fuel gas supplied through vents 19, the minor amount of feedstock is preferably 5-20% by wt. of the feedstock input and the sprays are focused at an angle of 30-60 degrees from the axis of the zone. The combustion gases introduced into the second zone may be formed using an air to fuel ratio of 10 : 1 and may be introduced into the zone as a plurality of streams spaced equidistantly about the periphery of the second reaction zone, and the combustion gas introduced into the third zone may also be introduced through points spaced equidistantly around the periphery of the third zone. The gas flow direction may be upwardly, downwardly or horizontally. Preferred proportions and apparatus arrangements are given.
