Abstract

1387434 Copying by scanning POTTER INSTRUMENT CO Inc 23 March 1972 [23 April 1971] 13643/72 Heading H4F A facsimile scanner 13 comprises a reciprocal scanning bar carrying a plurality (as described, twelve) of photo-cells aligned parallel to the line scanning direction, the printer 11 having a corresponding number of hammer blades 21 co-operating with a helical bar 19 on a rotatable drum 15, each photo-cell being connected via a respective AND gate 33 and OR gate 27 to one of the hammer firing circuits 29. A second reciprocal scanning bar having a like plurality of photo-cells may be included, each scanning bar scanning alternate lines of a document to be copied and being driven by a respective cam so as to move linearly during scanning. A transducer 35 viewing a tone wheel 37 rotated with drum 15 produces an output pulse on channel 41 for each revolution of drum 15 and an output pulse on channel 38 each time the intersection between each blade 21 and bar 19 passes through a dot print position. The output pulses on channels 39 and 41 are fed to scanner 13 to synchronize its operation, the pulses on channel 39 being fed to a frequency comparator (131, Fig. 10, not shown) and the pulses on channel 41 being fed to a phase comparator (133), the frequency and phase comparators also receiving respective signals from transducers viewing tone wheels rotated by the motor driving the scanning bars, the motor speed being controlled by the outputs of the frequency and phase comparators. The document being copied and the printed sheet may both be moved continuously in which case the scanning bars move in a skewed manner so as to scan, on the document, at right angles to the direction of document feed, the hammer blades 21 being similarly skewed. The pulses on channel 39 are also supplied to AND gates 33 so that printing only takes place at dot print position. Non-linear amplifiers (110, Fig. 11, not shown) may be included between scanner 13 and printer 11. A circuit 25, synchronized by the pulses on channels 39 and 41 may produce signals to print alphanumeric characters in addition to the facsimile copy.
