Abstract

1387412 Detecting combustible gases electrically ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO Ltd 6 July 1972 [7 July 1971] 31862/71 Heading G1N A combustible gas detector comprises a heated platinum wire filament 2 surrounded by a homogeneous mixture 3 of refractory material e.g. alumina, and catalyst material, e.g. palladium chloride or platinum chloride. The resistance of the filament changes with the temperature change arising from the oxidation of the combustible gas passing over the filament. The element may be connected in a bridge circuit with a compensating element 6 comprising a similar filament 7 surrounded by a mixture 8 of refractory material and an oxidation suppressant such as potassium hydroxide. Potentiometer 10 is adjusted to give zero meter reading in a normal atmosphere before the detector is subjected to the test atmosphere. Since the compensation and detector elements may be of different colour and hence have different thermal emissivities leading change of bridge balance with different applied voltages, a compensating resistor may be connected across the element 6.
