Abstract
1387462 Filter with clogging indicator ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 8 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 26761/72 Heading B1D A fluid filtering apparatus 1 having a filter element clogging indicator comprises a three part housing 2, 3, 4 having inlet 8 and outlet 9 separated by outward flow annular filter element 5 mounted between perforated cylinders and screwed into housing part 3 by means of integral threaded sleeve 6. The apparatus has a clogging indicator formed by a piston 13 the lower face of which communicates via channel 29 with the fluid inlet and the upper face of which communicates via passage 32 with the fluid outlet. The piston is mounted on a stem 18 having an upper threaded portion 17 and a lower knurled end 21. Piston 13, which is biassed downwardly by spring 20, slides in a bush 22 within a transparent housing part 4, the piston having a coloured indicating tape wrapped around its periphery. Channel 29 is conical in shape and holds two loose balls 31. On clogging of the filter element the piston 13 is forced upwards and the coloured indicating tape shows in transparent housing 4. As the piston rises, screw-threaded rod 17 passes upwardly through channel 29 and engages the balls 31 (Fig. 3 not shown). This engagement of the balls and the screw-thread prevents the piston returning to its zero position if the pressure difference caused by the clogging subsequently vanishes. The piston is returned to zero manually by turning knurled rod end 21 and screwing threaded portion 17 from engagement with the balls 31.
