1386295 Adjustable hinges for car seats K GIULIANI 28 April 1972 [30 April 1971 15 March 1972] 19935/72 Heading A4J [Also in Division E2] In an adjustable hinge, particularly suitable for the back rests of car seats, one hinge member 2 with a toothed rack 6a pivots on a formation A of a second hinge member, and a locking element 7 on the member 2 is radially movable in a slot 4a of a guide plate 4 being urged toward or away from the rack 6a by the engagement of a cam follower with cam surfaces provided on an actuating member rotatable by turning shaft 5 within pivot ring 11. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4 the actuating member is a plate 5 fast with shaft 12 and provided with an arcuate slot 5a to receive a curved cam follower 7b. The inner and outer edges of the slot 61,62 extend from a minimum to a maximum distance from the shaft 12 and can engage bearing surfaces 63,64 on the cam follower to positively urge the locking element in or out on rotation of the plate 5. In another embodiment shown in Fig. 7 the actuating member is a circular plate 50 eccenttrically mounted on to shaft 12 and the cam follower is an annular link 51 pivoted to the lock - ing element at 52. Cam surface zones 69, 70 engage bearing surfaces 67, 68 to move the locking element. The shaft 12 is normally biased to the locked position by a coil spring 53 (not shown) which is arranged with one end in slot 65 and the other on anchor point 54 on a plate 3 fast with member 1 A further coil spring 17 (not shown) acts between anchor points 55, 56 to bias the hinge members to the closed position. An operating knob 19 (not shown) is attached to the shaft 12 and when two hinges are to be used together, for example in a seat, the shafts may be coupled together and operated by a common knob.
