Abstract

1386074 Thermal regenerators LEYLAND GAS TURBINES Ltd 15 May 1972 [18 Feb 1971] 4908/71 Addition to 1307365 Heading F4K The sealing arrangement described in Specification 1,307,365, is modified to eliminate tipping of the matrix 3 produced by excess compressor pressure P20, Fig. 1 and excess turbine outlet pressure P17 and arising because of the particular type of bearings employed for the matrix and because of the working clearance required in practice in the bearings. The modification comprises providing mechanical biasing means bearing directly upon the matrix and these act also to produce a resultant force on the matrix acting in a direction towards seals 10 on the higher temperature end face of the matrix. Fig. 4 shows one biasing means comprising a pad 24 biased by a spring 23. Fig. 5 shows another such means used alternatively or additionally to that of Fig. 4, and comprising a pad 26 biased by a fluid operable piston 27. Such fluid may comprise either of the heat exchanging fluids or it may be derived from an independent source.
