Abstract
1386066 Extrusion coating of twin conductors BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 13 Sept 1972 13828/74 Divided out of 1371211 Heading B5A A method of making electric cable comprises passing two or more parallel coplanar conductors 11, 19 including at least one with insulation 12, through the core tube of an extrusion machine which applies a continuous overall covering 14 around the conductors, and continuously treating the covering by passing it through a chamber sealed to the outlet of the extrusion machine and containing a fluid medium under super-atmospheric pressure. Another fluid injected at a lower pressure into the core tube maintains a pressure differential across the covering 14 at the extrusion orifice sufficient to cause the covering to collapse firmly on to the conductors 11, 19 but insufficient to force the covering back along the core tube. The resulting covering 14 has approximately uniform radial thickness around most of its periphery, having arcuate end parts 16 united by re-entrant parts 17 and bounding a single bore 13. Where the covering is to be heat-treated the fluid medium in the pressure chamber may be steam or other suitable curing fluid; where it is to be cooled the medium may be water. The fluid injected into the core tube is preferably an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen. Preferably the pressure differential is automatically controlled by altering the rate of injection of fluid into the core tube. The thickness of the covering 14 responds to the throughput speed, so allowing a wider tolerance on the dimensions of the extrusion dies. It is stated that no bonding occurs between the primary insulation 12 and the covering 14, even without the use of French chalk or other preventive material, and even when the primary insulation and the covering are of the same material, e.g. PVC. Appropriate legend can be indented or embossed on the covering, preferably on an arcuate surface 16. Specification 1,371,211 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,201,528.
