Abstract

1385912 Optical gauging apparatus BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 6 Sept 1972 [7 Sept 1971] 41758/71 Heading G1M A travelling metal or plastics bar 3 has its crosssection examined by light projectors 5, 6 which illuminate a sharp edged area in a plane transverse to the bar so that collectors 7, 8 reflect the light via reflective surfaces 18, 19, 21, to a collection lens 20 which forms an image 27 of the area on a television camera unit 12 and a monitor screen 26. The presentation may however be a ground glass screen rather than television apparatus. Each projector 5, 6 comprises a light source 13, which could be intermittent flash, a first mask 15 at the focus of a lens 14 and a second mask 16 as shown, the arrangement being such as to provide a beam of light 17 preferably at 90 degrees to the long axis of the bar 3. The projectors could however use mirrors rather than the lens and masks, and the apparatus may be used in conjunction with a profile rolling mill control device and a graticule to measure the profile.
