Abstract
1385154 Spanners; workpiece gripping LACREX BREVETTI SA 7 Feb 1973 [18 Feb 1972] 5987/73 Headings B3N and B3B [Also in Division F2] A gripping device or tool adapted to conform to the shape and size of a component to which it is applied comprises a housing defining an openended chamber, a pack of bars slidably disposed in side-by-side relation in the chamber and bearing at their rear ends on a resilient pad having an elastic casing enclosing a compressible or displaceable medium and means for retaining the bars in the chamber. The elastic casing may be of plastics material and the enclosed medium may be gas or air under pressure, hydraulic fluid or a mass of gas-filled balls, optionally in a fluid medium. The bars have interengaging recesses and projections to ensure retention in the chamber. In a first embodiment, Fig. 3, the device is incorporated in a spanner; in this case the bars may be formed to provide a conical centring recess (8), (Fig. 2, not shown). In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, a drive transmission coupling comprises two devices 2<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>11</SP> coupled back-to-back, e.g. by screw-threaded engagement. Alternatively the coupling may comprise a single member with a through chamber, two sets of bars being provided which bear against a single central resilient pad. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6, a chuck for a machine tool, e.g. a drilling machine, incorporates a resilient pad filled with oil and connections 11 provide for displacement and/or control of the pressure of oil in the pad. A plug member 12 fixed in the upper part of the casing is adapted to receive drive, e.g. from a shaft of the machine tool. Reference is made to the use of the invention in bench vices.
