Abstract
1385053 Automatic control of speed MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG Ltd 18 Jan 1973 [18 Jan 1972] 2329/72 Heading G3R The speed of rotation of a first member which runs at a non-uniform speed is made equal to that of a second member over part of a revolution of the first member by detecting the difference in the speeds over the part revolution and adjusting the speed of the first member accordingly. The application relates to the control of a rotary knife cutting a continuously fed paper web into predetermined lengths and the adjustment is made by altering the eccentricity of the crank driving the knife roller. The web speed and the knife speed can be detected as digital signals, Fig. 2 (not shown), or as analogue signals, Fig. 3 (not shown), and the detectors are switched on by a trip mechanism 53, 52 so that the measurement is taken over the cutting zone alone. In the embodiment shown, separate motors 60, 61 are used to drive the draw rolls and cutting knives respectively and their speeds are measured by tacho-generators 62, 63. Over the cutting period the voltages are compared in comparator 64 and the difference signal used to alter the variable speed gear 65. The ratios of the average angular velocities of the drives can be compared and the speed of motor 60 adjusted to give the required sheet length as set in control circuit 68.
