Abstract

1384600 Making lock nuts SIMMONDS SA 6 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 26304/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] A method of making a lock-nut comprises (a) cold forging a nut blank having a bore extending from one end face 11, a counter-bore extending from the other end face, the difference in radii of the bore and counter-bore being comparable to the wall thickness of the blank surrounding the counter-bore at its bottom, and a bevelled surface 18, (b) providing a thread 15, (c) introducing a deformable ring 19 into the counter-bore, and (d) flattening the other end face by a press stroke to form an annular portion 21 which retains the ring 19 in the counter-bore. Projections are formed during cold forging on the internal periphery and/or the base of the counter-bore to prevent rotation of the ring 19, which is preferably of a deformable plastics material, e.g. a polyamide, nylon or the like. The annular portion 21 and the ring 19 define a groove or slot 22, which may be eliminated by applying a spherical press tool to the upper surface of the nut, Fig. 6 (not shown).
