Abstract

1384694 Plastics laminates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 July 1972 [20 July 1971 11 May 1972] 34008/71 and 22050/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A material capable of being further shaped comprises at least one shapable polymeric skin layer and at least one layer of a partly polymerized mixture of (a) 5-95 wt. per cent polyurethane precursors, preferably substantially free of ethylenic unsaturation, comprising (i) at least one polyfunctional compound containing at least two isocyanate-reactive groups and (ii) at least one polyisocyanate with (b) 95-5 wt. per cent cured polyester resin precursors comprising (iii) at least one ethylenically-unsaturated polyester containing in each molecule at least two isocyanate-reactive groups and (iv) at least one ethylenically-unsaturated co-monomer (see Division C3). The partiallypolymerized layer may be sandwiched between two skin layers, one of which (e.g. a polyethylene layer), may be removed before shaping. The skin layer(s) may comprise thermoplastic material, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, copoly (vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate), polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, ABS or ABS- polyvinyl chloride blend, a partially-cured thermosetting material, e.g. unsaturated polyester, or an elastomer, e.g. latex rubber, polyurethane, styrene-butadiene or ethylene-propylene. Elastomers are preferably present as an inner layer, e.g. a polyurethane coating, on an outer thermoplastic skin. The thickness of the skin layer(s) on any one face of the partiallypolymerized layer should be 2-100% that of said layer. The partially-polymerized layer may be reinforced by fibres such as carbon, asbestos, glass, polyester and nylon, chopped glass fibre strand mat(s) and chopped nylon fibres being used in examples, and may contain fillers. The material is made by contacting the skin layer(s) and mixture of polymer precursors, which may be partly reacted, and reacting as necessary to render the article handleable. Heat, pressure and adhesive may be used. Reaction of (ii) with (i) and (iii) occurs at this stage, usually at ambient temperature. The skin and precursors may be contacted by calendering or doctoring and fibrous reinforcing mats may be impregnated before or after contact with the skin. The material may be shaped by compression moulding, vacuum forming or pressing on a former, with heating if necessary, and is then cured, whilst on the mould or after removal therefrom, to react (iii) and (iv). Heat for these stages may be supplied via the mould or by radiant heating, dielectric heating or hot air. Examples describe vacuum forming over cones. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,272,984 and 1,279,673.
