Abstract

1383432 Circulation in defined paths L A A LEFRANCOIS 17 Jan 1972 [20 Jan 1971] 2156/72 Heading B1C [Also in Division C6] In the propagation of micro-organisms and production of substances by fermentation in apparatus consisting essentially of an ascending head, a descending head and provision for agitating the liquid medium by insufflating a stream of gas into the lower portion of the ascending head chamber, the ascending head chamber has a lower portion 1, Fig. 1 of restricted cross-sectional area and an upper portion 2 which increases regularly in width. The apparatus may be employed for aerobically propagating yeast on neutralized desulphitized bisulphite liquor from a paper pulp mill. The enclosed apparatus of Fig. 5 is suitable for an ethanolic fermentation by yeast wherein the. requisite agitation is achieved by re-injecting part of the carbon dioxide produced into the lower portion of the ascending head chamber 17 through line 22. Apparatus of the form depicted in Fig. 3, in which the chambers are disposed externally of each other, may, for example, be used for growing yeast on normal paraffins. The following preferred features are disclosed: The orifices through which the insufflation gas is introduced are 1 sq. inch in cross-section with a spacing of the order of 4 inches (10 cm.). The rate of penetration of the insufflation gas into the liquid medium ranges from 10 to 40 metres/sec. A centripetal accelerator may assist the insufflation of gas. The cross-sectional area of the ascending head chamber at the top. is up to 5 or 6 times larger than at the bottom. The rate of flow of liquid medium at the end of the ascending head and through the descending head is kept at a value higher than 0.2-0.5 metres/sec. The volume of the chambers may be reduced by the interpositioning of solid bodies, see 25 on Fig. 3. The liquid medium may make roughly 1-3 revolutions of the apparatus per minute. The temperature of the liquid medium is regulated by use of hollow partitions within which cold water is circulated, see Fig. 7 on Fig. 2 and 15 on Fig. 4. These may bear on the bottom of the apparatus to strengthen the structure. The number of ascending head chamber(s) in the apparatus may differ from the number of descending head chamber(s).
