Abstract
1383476 Electric meters; recording apparatus FOXBORO CO 9 Feb 1973 [31 March 1972] 6390/73 Headings G1Q and G1J [Also in Division F2] An apparatus for positioning a member 76 includes an element 70 which changes dimensionally with temperature and a spring assembly 82, 90 which opposes any temperature-induced changes in the member 76 and whose opposing force reduces as the change increases. In a device for positioning a pen-recorder stylus the wire 70 contracts when heated inductively by a coil (80) Fig. 7 (not shown). The frequency of the coil signal is a function of the input voltage Fig. 11 (not shown). As the wire 70 contracts, member 76 is rotated about a flexible support 78 fixed to the recorder housing. Leaf spring 82 is fixed at one end 88 to the recorder housing and at the other places a strut 90 in compression. Strut 90 bears against member 76 at 92 and opposes the member 76 rotation. As the member 76 rotates, the angle it forms with strut 90 decreases and the opposing force thus decreases also. The rotation is coupled by pivot 102 and linkages 96-100 to a flexible support 104 on the housing. A spindle (110), Fig. 7 (not shown), is aligned with support 104 and connected to linkage 100. Rotation of the member 76 thus rotates the spindle (110) causing the pen-recorder stylus to be correctly positioned. If the stylus is subjected to external force e.g. by end-stops or operator error, spring 106 absorbs the energy, protecting the wire 70 from excessive stress. In the coil driver circuit, Fig. 11 (not shown), a differential amplifier has inputs from a potentiometer driven by member 76 and the input voltage. The amplifier output charges a capacitor which provides the bias voltage to transistor oscillator, thereby determining its frequency. The oscillator output drives the heating coil, until the two amplifier inputs are equal.
