Abstract

1383249 Bedpan apparatus; stands W O THOMPSON 13 Jan 1972 1557/72 Headings A4H and A4N [Also in Divisions A5 and B8] Bedpan apparatus comprises a mobile cart device and a portable device 4 which is separable from the cart device and which includes a bedpan; the cart device includes a cantilever support for the portable device, a frame and winching means; wherein the frame comprises a lower portion 19 and a post 18 upstanding from the lower portion; wherein one end portion of the cantilever support has the portable device 4 detachably located thereon and the other end portion of the support is movably mounted on the post 18; wherein the portable device 4 has a marginal portion 12 which is tapered to slope the undersurface of the portable device 4 so that its depth decreases towards its periphery; and wherein the winching means is arranged to move the support, positively and forcefully, up and down the post 18, for impressing the undersurface, in use, into a mattress to facilitate use of the bedpan. The portable device 4 comprises a carrier cast from aluminium alloy or other light material and of generally rectangular form, with a cavity 5 for a bedpan. The cantilever support comprises rods 7, having parallel ends slidably engaging sockets in the carrier 4, a converging midportion, and other parallel ends slidably engaging sockets 16 in a carriage 17 movable up and down post 18 by means of anti-friction wheels 21. Carrier 4 may have handles 10, whereby, when the apparatus is moved to an emptying point, the carrier and bedpan together may be removed for cleaning. The winching means comprise a drum 23 with a handle 22. A cable 24 anchored near opposite ends of post 18 passes a number of times round the drum and is kept under tension. A heavy metal plate 31 is bolted to the lower portion 19 of the frame so that the frame is not raised from the floor when the casing 4 is lowered on to a bed so as to be pressed into a mattress 9 substantially with its top flush with the mattress, in the position indicated in full lines. The lower part 19 of the frame may have a locator to engage below the bed, instead of the weight 31. In use, the patient is rolled to one side, the apparatus is brought up, and the casing 4 is pressed into the mattress in the correct position for the patient when he is rolled back. The casing 4 may itself be used as a bedpan.
