Abstract

1382112 Ships fittings ISHIKAWAJIMA. HARIMA JUKOGYO KK 13 Jan 1972 1622/72 Heading B7S [Also in Division E1] In a method of constructing a vessel hull, vertical web frames 23 are first erected upon bottom shell plating 19 and then at least one lower work unit 1, Fig. 1, see also Division E1, exemplified as a gantry having legs 7 resting upon the ground 18 and upon hull transverse members 22, is arranged to bridge part of the hull width and to extend longitudinally of the hull along a first hull section to carry welding machines and other equipment for welding together the side shell plating 20, longitudinal bulkhead plating 21, bottom shell plating 19 and web frames 23, and for welding cross ties 24 and 25 between the web frames 23. Side shell and longitudinal bulkhead plating is then erected in the lower part of the hull in an adjacent section longitudinally of the hull and the lower work unit is moved into that section so that similar erection procedures may continue in that section. Longitudinal rails 27 are laid over at least the uppermost of cross ties 24, 25 and an upper wheeled work unit 2, Fig. 5, see also Division E 1, is mounted on the rails so as to be movable from the first hull section to the next hull section. The work unit 2 provides retractable and extendable platforms 12,15 to support equipment for erecting and welding the upper deck. Two lower work units 1 may be employed on the same side of the hull in a side-by-side arrangement at adjacent sections and may be advanced alternately one over the other. Work units are provided on both port and starboard sides of the hull. A number of work units 2 may be used and may be connected together by a connecting stage 31.
