Abstract
1382015 Reshaping the cornea C W NEEFE 29 June 1973 31080/73 Heading A5R A method of treating the eye to eliminate refractive errors of vision comprises applying to the cornea medicament for softening the cornea, applying a concave mould having sections of predetermined curvatures to the cornea to mould the cornea to the predetermined curvatures, keeping the mould in position until the medicament is no longer active and the cornea has hardened and removing the mould from the cornea. The mould has a peripheral section 9 the inner surfaces of which have a curvature substantially equal to that of the cornea and a central section 8 the inner surface of which has a curvature which is calculated to make the eye emmetropic. The curvature of the outer surface 1 of section 8 is such as to produce zero refractive power. The mould is preferably formed of gas permeable plastics material and central section 8 may be transparent. The medicament may be dispersed in the mould material for release at a predetermined rate. Suitable medicaments are proparacaine hydrochloride, dyclonine hydrochloride, diethylaminoact-2, 6-xylidide hydrochloride, chlorine, or proteolytic enzymes. Hardening of the cornea may be accelerated by administering Vitamin C.
