Abstract
1381528 Driving and supporting centrifuge rotor SIEMENS AG 18 Feb 1972 [23 Feb 1971] 7722/72 Heading B2P [Also in Divisions F2 and H2] A centrifuge 1 is mounted on a vertical shaft 2 driven by an electric motor 3, the shaft 2 being supported at its lower end by a thrust bearing 5 and at its upper end by a magnetic bearing 6. The bearing 5 includes a body 32 which receives the spherical end 2" of the shaft 2, a thrust plate 29, and an oilcontaining disc 33 which serves to lubricate the end 2", any oil leaving the bearing being returned to the disc 33, under the action of a centrifugal disc 34, by way of apertures 35 in the body 32. The bearing 6 comprises magnetic rings 20 which are mounted on the shaft 2 and which are adhesively bonded to thin non-magnetic separating rings 17 of high mechanical strength. The rings 21 cooperate with stationary magnetic rings 21, similarly separated by non-magnetic rings 17, to form a resilient journal bearing for the upper end of the shaft 2. An emergency bearing 22, which may be of the ball bearing type (Fig. 2, not shown), also cooperates with the upper end of the shaft 2 and is provided with a smaller clearance than the bearing 6 so that the latter is not damaged when the shaft 2 is deflected more than normally as might happen when the centrifuge passes through a critical speed during run-up. The electric motor comprises a finned housing 10, a permanent magnet rotor 4, a wound stator 7 and two Hall generators 12 which serve to control transistors (not shown) provided in association with the winding sections of the stator 7.
