Abstract
1381417 Seed crystal holder MULLARD Ltd 27 Sept 1973 45284/73 Headings B1G and B1S A seed crystal in which part is enclosed by a layer of 0.025 to 0.5 mm. thick metal foil is secured in a V-shaped longitudinally extending recess in a holder by clamping wires acting radially on the foil covered seed crystal. In the recess the angle between the limbs of the V is equal to the angle between two adjacent flat faces of the seed crystal, i.e. from 60 to 120‹. The metal of the foil is selected from annealed gold, nickel, aluminium, lead, tin or platinum. The seed holder has preferably grooves for the wire as has the enclosed seed crystal remote from the recess. As shown in the figures seed crystal 1 is secured in bolder 2, with part of the length of the crystal adjacent the holder enclosed by gold foil 3, by gold wires 4. As shown in Fig. 2, the recess is formed by limbs 6 and 7 and between these limbs a slot 8 is provided which avoids stress on the crystal at its vertex 9. The holder is used in growing single crystals by pulling from a melt. For Figure see next column
