Abstract

1380348 Auxiliaries for ships J L MURRAY 13 March 1972 11702/72 Headings B7S and B7V [Also in Division F2] A boat 14 is supplied with electrical power from a unit 10 which comprises an I.C. engine and a generator inside a waterproof casing, the exhaust discharge of the engine being located under water. The unit may supply the boat only when the latter is stationary or may also be towed by the boat when it is under way. The arrangement reduces noise and vibration and improves safety. The casing of the unit 10 comprises two halves joined at flanges 20 and 22 which, together with fins 94 and 96, help to inhibit rotation of the unit about the drive axis of the engine 34. A casing door 100 is held closed by a spring-loaded catch so that it can blow open if overpressure is generated in the casing. Combustion air is drawn in through a snorkel tube 54 and before reaching the engine passes over the generator 36 to cool it. The engine exhaust pipe terminates in a nozzle 80 which normally faces towards the boat so that the exhaust discharge tends to move the unit to its maximum distance from the boat. A flexible concertina section 78 allows the nozzle to bend away from its forwardly facing position. The nozzle is formed by opposed flexible side walls which, when the exhaust is not discharging, co-operate to prevent the admission of water. A tube 86 enters the exhaust pipe so that the exhaust stream draws any water from the bottom of the casing. The unit includes a fuel tank 42.
