1380278 Gripping tools A W NEAL 14 Dec 1972 [31 Dec 1971] 60932/71 Heading B4W [Also in Division B3] A maintenance tool particularly applicable to maintenance work required on flow control devices such as taps and valves comprises a casing 51 which is fastenable to the device 62 to be required to provide a sealed pressure chamber, a pair of telescopically arranged members 76, 80 which are slidable and rotatable within the chamber and are detachably removable therefrom, one of the members 76 having means for grasping external removable parts (e.g. the hexagonal head gear) of the valve and the other having means for grasping internal parts (e.g. the stem of the valve washer plate), and a valve 55 which is arranged to close off a part of the chamber so that the members 76, 80 together with parts removed from the device 62 under repair can be isolated and then removed totally from the casing for repair while leaving the device 62 still sealed off. The lower end of the outer tube 76 is formed as a hexagonal socket while the lower end of the inner tube 80 is provided with threads 81 to receive a collet 88 for gripping the valve stem. The collet operates in conjunction with an internally tapered adaptor (Fig. 7, not shown) which may be fitted in the socket at the lower end of the tube 76. The tool is attached to the valve 62 to be repaired by means of a clip 56 which passes around the valve body and a rubber ring 59 makes sealing engagement with the valve body and a flanged bottom portion of the casing. The tubes 76, 80 pass through suitable seals at the upper end of the casing and are provided at their upper ends with handles or other means for effecting the necessary rotary and sliding movements within the chamber. A tool (92) (Fig. 9, not shown) may be attached to the lower end of the inner tube for machining the valve seat in situ. A second embodiment (Figs. 10-17, not shown) differs mainly in the form of the clip which assists in attaching the whole device to the body of a valve or tap to be dismantled for repair.
