Abstract

1379874 Cyclopentene derivatives L GIVAUDAN & CIE SA 16 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 12665/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises a process for preparing compounds of the formula where R<SP>1</SP> is H, OH, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy, R<SP>2</SP> is H, lower alkyl or lower alkylidene the broken line denotes an optional bond and the lower alkyl, alkoxy or alkylidene groups contain up to 6 carbon atoms by reacting 3 - isopropenyl - 1 - methyl - 2 - methylenecyclopentan-1-ol in the presence of an acid catalyst with a compound of the formula R<SP>5</SP>-CH = CR<SP>1</SP>-OR or where R is C 1-6 alkyl and R<SP>5</SP> is C 1-6 alkyl or C 2-6 alkenyl, and, if desired, catalytically hydrogenating the 3-isopropenyl group and/or oxidizing the aldehyde group to the carboxy group and optionally converting the carboxy group to a carboxylic acid alkyl ester. The invention further comprises compounds of the formula where R<SP>12</SP> is H, OH or C 1-6 alkoxy.
